Staff made sure customers would pay attention by sticking replica TWD 1,000 notes to the ground to make shoppers look down.

The Xin Hua market – in Tainan City, southern Taiwan – thought customers would simply ignore a street sign.

So they wrote – in Chinese – ‘mind your steps’ above the notes, which would be worth GBP 27 each if they were the real thing.

One visitor, who goes by the username Cai Pan, shared pictures of the warning on Facebook with the caption: “There were banknotes on the ground which could be picked up.”

Many netizens applauded the smart and eye-catching trick.

User ‘Ye Dianhan’ commented: “I give this idea full score.”

But others suggested this might lead to different accidents with people rushing to grab the notes.

User ‘Chen Xiaoting’ said: “And then someone will accidentally trip over to get the money.”

The Xin Hua Fruit and Vegetable Market was reportedly opened in December of 2022, and has been attracting attention from almost day one.

It quickly became known as “the most beautiful fruits and vegetables market” in Taiwan, according to local media.
