Police in Turkey are hunting for a jilted man who shot his beautiful ex-girlfriend nine times as she sat in a cafe.
The chilling slaying took place in Kayapinar district, Diyarbakir city, south-eastern Turkey on 13th November.
M. S., 24, had learnt that his ex-girlfriend, 21-year-old Meryem Sevim, was in a cafe and headed to the address.
After arriving, he pulled a gun and opened fire at her multiple times in succession.
Meryem was hit by nine bullets and dropped to the ground covered in blood, while M. S. fled the scene.
Shocked eyewitnesses called emergency services and police and paramedics were dispatched to the scene.
Meryem was given first aid at the scene and then taken to Diyarbakir Gazi Yasargil Training And Research Hospital.
But she succumbed to her injuries despite medics’ best efforts.
Her body was handed over to her family following an autopsy at the Forensic Medicine Institute.
At the time of reporting, M. S. remained at large and police were searching for him.
Femicide is a growing problem in Turkey, particularly after the country officially quit the Istanbul Convention in July last year.
According to the 2021 Annual Data Report announced by the ‘We Will Stop Femicide Platform’, 280 women were killed by men in 2021, while 217 women were found suspiciously dead.
According to data from the ‘Monument Counter’, which is “a digital memorial for women killed by violence” and is updated daily, 337 femicides have taken place in Turkey so far this year.
