Examination Shows Woman Who Claimed To Have Given Birth To Decuplets Was Never Even Pregnant

The South African woman who made headlines worldwide after she allegedly gave birth to a record-breaking ten babies from a single pregnancy did not give birth recently, and was not even pregnant.

Gosiame Thamara Sithole, 37, was falsely reported to have given birth to decuplets at the Steve Biko Academic Hospital in the city of Pretoria on the night of 7th July.

The Gauteng Provincial Government of South Africa revealed that their investigation has shown that Gosiame had invented the whole story and is now being cared for by psychiatrists at the Tembisa Hospital.

Gosiame was admitted to the Tembisa hospital under the Mental Healthcare Act on 21st June for a minimum of seven days.

The legitimacy of the story was already up in the air after doubts were raised by her husband’s family.

Furthermore, the South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF) claimed that Piet Rampedi, the editor of Pretoria News who first brought the story to light, had never actually seen the babies and based it all on a few Whatsapp messages.

In a statement obtained by local news site iharare, the Gauteng Provincial Government said: “It has now been established by medical practitioners that Ms Sithole has not recently given birth to any babies. It has also been established that she was not recently pregnant.”

The investigations found that the claim made by Gosiame that the government and the Steve Biko Academic Hospital were colluding to cover up the pregnancy and the record-breaking birth is entirely false.

The ‘pregnancy’ was a very profitable affair for Sithole as she was gifted a ZAR 1 million (GBP 51,474) by a philanthropist named Dr Iqbal Surve.

Gosiame had previously been confronted with an accusation that claimed she was never pregnant and that she simply didn’t have the appearance of someone who had just given birth to 10 babies.

She replied to the claims saying: “I’m hurting. Everything they said about me is incorrect.”

The local government said: “The Gauteng Provincial Government will continue to give medical, psychological and social support to Ms Sithole and provide any counselling she might require.”

It is not clear what actions will be taken in regards to the financial donations that Gosiame received to support her ‘ten children’ and if any legal proceedings will be brought against her.

The authorities also added that the editor of Pretoria News, Piet Rampedi, who first published the story to light is under investigation.

The Gauteng Provincial Government said: “We are deeply concerned by the conduct of the Independent Media, particularly the editor of the Pretoria News, Mr Piet Rampedi.”
