Former Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has said “the future of Real Madrid happens if Messi goes to Australia” rather than with Kylian Mbappe’s possible arrival.

Former Spanish Prime Minister Rajoy, 64, spoke with local media after releasing his book “A Better Spain” where he speaks about his time in office and mentions his love of sports.

Rajoy, 64, who is a known Real Madrid supporter in Spain, was asked about the future of the club, especially the possible transfer of Paris Saint-Germain superstar Mbappe, 20.

The former Prime Minister answered: “The future of Real Madrid happens if Messi goes to Australia.”

The comments come after Messi scored the winning goal in the 86th minute against Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitan Stadium during Barcelona’s 1-0 victory on Sunday.

Rajoy went on to speak about some controversy that surrounded him for going to a European Championship match during one of the most difficult times in Spain during its most recent economic crisis.

Rajoy admitted he “knew it was going to generate criticism and I considered staying in La Moncloa (Spanish Presidential House) and watching the football from home which would be more relaxing” but ultimately decided to go as he had given his word to Polish President Donald Tusk.

Rajoy’s comments on Mbappe’s transfer come after rumours of a possible move to the Spanish club have been reported for several months.

However Paris Saint-Germain Sporting Director Leonardo Araujo, 50, recently told media: “He is staying here 100 percent, he is 100 percent a PSG player, he is here and the rest does not matter.”

Rajoy was the Prime Minister of Spain from 2011 to 2018 during which time Spain was suffering an economic crisis.
