A woman who convinced her lover to kill her husband has been found guilty of premeditated murder and jailed with her lover for a total of almost 40 years between them.
Maria Jesus Moreno, 30, was sentenced to 22 years and her former lover and Salvador Rodrigo, 50, to 17 years for the crime of the premeditated murder.
The victim was Moreno’s husband Antonio Navarro, 36, who was stabbed half a dozen times by her lover in the garage of his home in the city of Valencia, in the eastern Spanish province of the same name on 16th July 2017.
According to national newspaper La Vanguardia, Moreno convinced Rodrigo to kill her husband for her, gave him the keys to the garage and told him when he would be there.
Forensics said during the trial that the onslaught was so sudden that the body had no defensive wounds.
During the trial, a total of five past lovers of the defendant were interrogated and some even testified that she had expressed her wish to see her husband dead, stating it clearly and repeatedly.
Reportedly, Rodrigo at first tried to protect his lover and wished to assume sole responsibility, however, he later on admitted that it was Moreno who persuaded him.
In addition, the guilty parties have been ordered to pay EUR 200,000 (GBP 178,500) in compensation to the parents of the victim and EUR 50,000 (GBP 44,600) to his brother.
The public prosecutor, Vicente Devesa, described the crime as “horrendous” and highlighted the “coldness” with which the widow acted since the murder of her husband.
According to national newspaper El Mundo, the verdict of the jury, consisting of five women and four men, asked that no mitigating measures be applied to Moreno, although it allowed for some leniency to Rodrigo for his collaboration during the investigation and a sincere and remorseful confession.
