These are the shocking images of a man whose leg was sucked into an escalator after he started using it while wearing slippers.

The man had stopped off to visit the shopping centre along the busy one-way Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman Road in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur.

But as he was coming down the escalator, his slipper got sucked into the device and was quickly followed by the man’s leg.

Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department spokesman commander Mohd Zuhair Faisal Zulkifli said the man was trapped for about 45 minutes and was eventually freed thanks to the work of six firemen from the Titiwangsa station.

He said that they were on the scene within five minutes of getting the call around 10am in the morning.

He said: “When the firemen arrived they found the 49-year-old man with his leg trapped in the escalator on the first floor of the shopping centre.”

Fireman said that the first priority was to secure the escalator to stop it moving any longer, which would have severed the man’s leg, and they then were able to dismantle it in order to free him.

He confirmed: “He did suffer a broken leg but it could have been worse and he was treated at Kuala Lumpur Gen Hospital.”
