This is the moment an emotional grandmother wearing a face mask in Barcelona meets her newborn granddaughter through a car window.

The moving images were taken in the city of Barcelona in the autonomous community of Catalonia in north-eastern Spain when mother Sara went back home with her newborn daughter.

The new mother said she had hidden the fact that she was giving birth from her parents and only told them they had a newborn granddaughter named India when she was on her way home.

Sara said on social media: “Mum I hope you forgive me for not calling and saying ‘mum we are going to the hospital I am giving birth’ I know if I had done it you would have had a sleepless night, worrying because of the situation that we are going through.”

The video shows the grandmother seeing her granddaughter for the first time, respecting social distancing and wearing face masks.

The visibly moved grandmother can be heard saying “oh my God, when was she born?”

Sara wrote: “I wanted you to meet her at least for two minutes. It was enough for me that you went down to your building’s front door wearing face masks and saw her and through the car window without touching her.

“I never thought it would be like that, I never thought that such a cold and distant way could be so intimate and warm, I’ve learnt that kisses and hugs can also be given with looks.”
