Dutch Man Jailed For 30 Years For Slitting Girlfriends Throat

A young Dutch woman who moved to Malta to enjoy life in the sun has died in a pool of her own blood in the street after she was reportedly kicked and punched by her boyfriend who then slashed her throat.

Shannon Mak, 30, was found with her throat slit and her body bruised as she lay lifeless in the street in the Maltese town of Santa Venera in the early hours of 3rd August 2018.

Her Dutch lover, who she had been dating for two years since moving to Malta, has now been jailed for 30 years after he confessed to killing his former girlfriend by stabbing her in the neck.

She had just returned from an event in Qawra organised by the gaming company she worked for when she was attacked.

Bloody handprints on the wall indicate she was holding onto it when she was killed after previously being kicked and punched.

Her former boyfriend, 25-year-old Jelle Rijpma, who she dated for two years, has finally been brought to justice for the gruesome murder after he confessed to committing the crime in October this year having previously feigned his innocence.

Rijpma faced life imprisonment for the crime, but he eventually received a 30-year prison sentence as part of a plea bargain and also a fine of EUR 116.47 (GBP 106) for possession of a knife.

Rijpma was 22 when he brutally beat his girlfriend before stabbing her to death following a row.

Mak had relocated to Malta in search of a new life experience. She was planning to up sticks to Spain before being killed.

The victim’s dad Frank called Rijpma “a monster”.
