A missing Lithuanian sailor feared drowned on Thursday emerged alive and well – if a little hungover – early on Sunday morning unaware of rescue efforts after going on a boozy bender.

Local French authorities in the port city of Brest had been conducting an urgent search for him since Friday afternoon and had deployed divers and a helicopter as they feared he might have fallen in the water.

The drunken sailor, however, emerged early on Sunday morning, nonchalantly strolling back to his moored Aquasurveyor ship, a Belgian vessel, after a few nights of heavy drinking in central Brest. He reportedly decided to stay in a hotel in the centre of town after going on a pub crawl around Brest’s bars.

But upon returning to his ship, moored in the Moulin-Blanc marina, and realising that divers and a helicopter had been searching for him since Friday afternoon, he hurried to the police station to report that he was not dead, just very hungover.

Searches for the missing sailor, who has not been named, had been ongoing since Friday after firefighter divers from the Kerallan fire station were deployed at around 2:30 pm to look for his body in the water. A helicopter had also been deployed to help with the search.

Authorities reviewed the CCTV footage of the marina, but it was reportedly situated right at the entrance to the pier and did not reveal anything.

Local media report that his Friday night must have been epic, given that he slept all of Saturday.
