This is the moment a drink-driving scooter owner tries to speed away from police after pulling up alongside them at a junction, but he only gets a few metres after he first of all loses his passenger and then topples over himself.

The incident was caught on the body camera of an officer in Taiwan’s western city of Taichung, where he and his partner spotted the pair with flushed faces as a result of their suspected drinking.

In the footage, the Taichung City Police Department Second Precinct officer surnamed Wu, speaks to the suspect surnamed Chang, 37, in Taiwanese dialect.

Chang’s friend and colleague can be seen riding pillion when the officer says: “Let me take a look at your documents.”

“Pull over to the side,” Wu adds.

Chang attempts to evade arrest and revs his scooter, speeding off in front of the cops.

However, his getaway is thwarted when his friend, who did not have time to react, falls off the back of the scooter, landing on his back as Chang drags him along the road for an instance and then falls himself.

Officer Wu and his colleague immediately race after the scooter and he asks the suspect: “What’s the matter with you?”

As Chang is held by the cop with nowhere to run, he immediately blurts out: “I’ve been drinking.”

Taichung police said Chang admitted to drinking spirits and beer with his friend before heading off to their worksite.

His friend did not require medical treatment, but Chang will face drink-driving charges.
