This is the moment motorists are forced to move out the way of a drunk lorry driver as he drives the wrong way on a motorway.

The dashcam footage shows lorry driver Li, who was identified by his surname, hugging the fast lane while speeding past vehicles on the Beijing-Hong Kong-Macau Expressway.

Traffic police in the city of Handan in North China’s Hebei Province were notified by shocked drivers who are seen performing evasive manoeuvres to avoid the oncoming lorry.

Officers eventually intercepted the lorry and flagged it down, arresting the driver Li who they said “smelled heavily of alcohol”.

A breathalyser test showed that Li was over the legal limit, and a subsequent toxicology report recorded his blood alcohol level at 356 mg / 100 ml.

The figure is more than four times the Chinese drink-driving threshold of 80 mg / 100ml.

The police said they were unable to question Li because he was too intoxicated.

However, the following day he revealed he got drunk with a group of other lorry drivers following the successful delivery of their cargo in the city of Fuyang in East China’s Anhui Province.

While driving home the next day, he had more to drink at a motorway service area and drunkenly believed he was driving the wrong way when in fact he had not been.

He therefore turned into oncoming traffic and continued to drive until he was stopped by the police.

Li’s lorry has been seized and he was fined 200 RMB (22 GBP) for dangerous driving.

He has also lost his licence after being given 12 demerit points.

No one was injured during the incident.
