This is the moment an allegedly drunk father takes his own baby son hostage with a knife to try to stop cops from arresting him.

The incident took place in the city of Francisco de Orellana, in the north-eastern Ecuadorian province of Orellana when the 21-year-old father, named in reports as D.E.A.A., took his 27-day-old son hostage.

Local media report the father under the influence of alcohol and had injured a 55-year-old man with a blade.

The 55-year-old man, named Sanchim Tunki Wasur, who reportedly has an arrest warrant for sexual abuse charges, was reportedly having a drink with D.E.A.A. when they began fighting for reasons unknown.

Wasur was taken to hospital but there are no updates on his condition.

The 21-year-old then reportedly took his own son hostage with the blade to stop cops arresting him for the earlier attack.

A specialist team were sent to the scene to negotiate with the suspect “who was repeatedly threatening to attack his son,” police sources told local media.

In the video, the father can be seen with his baby son in his arms and a blade in his left hand. He is behind a metal railing in a standoff with cops who try to talk him into releasing the tot.

A huge crowd has gathered and local media report the police eventually managed to enter the property and arrest the suspect. The baby was reportedly unharmed in the incident.

Maria Paula Romo, the Interior Minister of Ecuador, applauded the reaction of the police in the case.

The investigation is ongoing.
