Drunk Brit Coughs At Majorca Revellers, Says Has COVID

A drunk British tourist has been arrested in Majorca for coughing at people in bars and restaurants saying he had coronavirus.

The 43-year-old man, whose name has not been revealed, is alleged to have purposefully coughed in the direction of customers in bars and restaurants in the Santa Catalina neighbourhood of the touristic city of Palma de Mallorca on the Spanish Balearic Island of Majorca.

The incident took place at around 11 pm on Monday in a busy area of bar and restaurant terraces, with the man said to have been drunk and not wearing a face mask as he coughed at people whilst claiming he had COVID-19, according to local newspaper Diario de Mallorca.

This local newspaper report several people called the National Police and when officers arrived at the scene the British man is alleged to have tried to escape.

The officers identified themselves but the man is said to have acted aggressively and resisted arrest, according to Diario de Mallorca who report the officers found that he was drunk.

He was arrested for disobedience and resisting authority and taken to the police station of Palma, local newspaper Ultima Hora reported.

The officers confirmed that he was a British tourist who was staying in a hotel in the Calvia area of the city and on Tuesday evening, he was presented in front of a judge, Diario de Mallorca report.

Police are waiting for the suspect to be tested for coronavirus and if he is positive and it can be confirmed that he knew so in advance, the man could be charged with a crime against public health.

The investigation is ongoing.

According to the latest figures from the Johns Hopkins University, Spain has registered 256,619 cases of COVID-19 and 28,409 related deaths.
