This is the moment a bungling drunk repeatedly smashes an ATM with a dustbin after putting away his bank card but mistakenly thinking the machine had swallowed it.

CCTV footage shows Mr Zhang inside the bank’s ATM booth in the city of Zhoushan in Zhejiang Province in East China on the evening of 19th October.

After the ATM returns his bank card, he puts it away, but moments later the drunk customer is seen furiously pressing the ATM’s buttons and slapping the machine, according to police.

Mistakenly believing the machine has swallowed his bank card, Mr Zhang is seen picking up the metal bin in the corner of the ATM booth and using to smash the screen.

Mr Zhang later left the booth, causing damage to the ATM, reports said.

He was visited by local police and detained on vandalism charges.

Wang Chenyu, with Shenjiamen Police Station, said: “Mr Zhang told us he had had too much to drink. He thought his bank card was still stuck in the ATM machine.

“In actual fact, his card wasn’t there and had already been put away, but he thought the card was inside, so he started hitting the machine.”

Mr Zhang was jailed for five days.
