Carlos Caro Quintero, 61, was arrested in Mexico City on Monday, 6th February with a white powder believed to be cocaine, cannabis, a gun and a Mercedes-Benz car without licence plates, according to local media.

His big brother Rafael, 70, is one of the FBI’s top 10 most wanted criminals in the world and is currently fighting extradition to the USA.

The family is said to run one of the most powerful cartels operating in northern Mexico.

Newsflash obtained a statement from Omar Garcia Harfuch, 40, the Head of the Secretariat of Citizen Security of Mexico City, on Monday.

He said: “This afternoon, colleagues from the Citizen Security Secretariat in the Miguel Hidalgo [borough of Mexico City] arrested Carlos ‘N’, a member of a criminal group which operates in the north of the country.”

‘N’ is a common substitute for a surname used by Mexican police in high-profile cases. Mexican media have reported that Carlos ‘N’ is Carlos Caro Quintero.

His brother Rafael Caro Quintero is a veteran Mexican drug lord who co-founded the now-disintegrated Guadalajara Cartel in the 1970s.

He is also a former leader of the now-defunct Sonora Cartel.

The USA has been trying to have him extradited – so far unsuccessfully – since his latest arrest in July 2022 for the murder of a US DEA agent.

He was convicted of the killing in a Mexican court in 1985.

Rafael Caro Quintero was recaptured in July of last year, during a special forces operation.

Until now, the only brother of Rafael who was known to be involved in criminal activities, was Miguel Angel Caro Quintero.

He was arrested in Mexico in 2001 and extradited to the United States in 2009, where he pleaded guilty to drug trafficking and provided information about the Sonora Cartel.
