This is the moment a bungling driver stops his car in a motorway fast lane while talking on the phone, causing a violent crash between a passing lorry and a van.

The driver, surnamed Yang, was distracted by his phone call and overshot a slip road on the Huai’an-Xuzhou Expressway over the city of Xuzhou in China’s eastern Jiangsu Province.

Traffic camera footage shows Yang’s white SUV, in which his wife and mother were also sitting, suddenly stopping in the fast lane of the busy motorway.

Four cars and a lorry manage to avoid rear-ending it, but when a van swerves to avoid the stopped car, a lorry is passing in the other lane at that very moment and they collide.

The video shows the van clipping the back of Yang’s SUV before crashing into the side of the car carrier trailer, which sends it spinning 360 degrees on the motorway.

That was fortunately the end of the multi-vehicle crash, which resulted in no serious injuries.

Xuzhou authorities who inspected dashcam footage from Yang’s car said his wife protested his decision to stop in the fast lane, but the motorist insisted because he did not want to take the next slip road several miles away.

Yang is expected to bear 100 percent of the liability for the accident, which is still being investigated.

It is unclear whether the stunt will cost him his driving licence.
