This is is the moment rescue crews save a driver who survived after crashing on a mountain road and plunging nearly 500 feet off a cliff.

The unnamed driver was driving through the town of Tieliu, which is in Huidong County in south-western China’s Sichuan Province, when he accidentally drove off the narrow mountain road on 19th June.

Authorities received a call from the distressed driver at 11:43pm local time and a rescue team began searching the base of the sheer drop shortly after arriving.

The police said they could hear the driver yelling for help, and they found him clinging to a bush in a bid to stop himself from sliding further down towards another drop just a few dozen feet away.

He was reportedly unable to move his left arm – the result of a suspected fracture – but they were able to direct him onto a nearby boulder.

Footage of the late-night rescue shows a large group of firefighters pulling the injured driver back up the cliff, which was above a drop measuring 150 metres (492 feet).

Incredibly, the driver is still able to move and they put him onto a stretcher.

Aerial footage taken the following day reveals just how far the motorist had fallen, while his crumbled white car can be seen at the bottom of the cliff, near another drop of a few dozen feet.

It is still unclear whether the driver was clung from his car or whether he crawled out the wreckage after his vehicle stopped rolling.

Exactly how he drove off the winding road with no street lamps is still being investigated.
