A suicidal cabbie whose wife reportedly cheated on him has been rescued after deliberately driving into a lake and sharing videos online as he tried to drown himself inside his car.

The unnamed cabbie, who is believed to be working for China’s ride-hailing giant Didi Chuxing, plunged his white saloon car into Dianchi Lake in Kunming, capital of south-western China’s Yunnan Province.

In one of the short clips he shared online, the taxi driver films the water surrounding his car and says: “Goodbye, friends. This is my final moment on this earth.”

Police officers who came to his aid can be seen standing on the riverbank and thinking of ways to rescue him before the car, which is in shallow water, is washed into deeper waters.

He adds: “Zhang Qingyan, I hate you. Yan Zhitong I hate you even more,” as the video ends.

Authorities were reportedly able to secure the car using ropes and rescuers forced open the driver’s side door with hydraulic tools before plucking him from the sinking vehicle.

Video taken by a witness shows him struggling and screaming as a rescuer pulls him to safety.

The cabbie was not injured, but he was taken to hospital by the police, who are also investigating the incident.

Those close to the cabbie were quoted in local media as saying he tried to kill himself due to relationship troubles.

They reported his wife had cheated on him, leading to his decision to end his life.
