This the moment a driver whose route is blocked by a bunch of Chilean protesters drives into the group – many of whom appear to be teenagers – at high speed running over four of them.

According to local media, the incident took place at 6pm last weekend in the middle of a protest in front of the regional government office in the city of Copiapo in the Atacama Region in northern Chile.

In the video, the driver of the car, reportedly a man, can be seen trying to pass the protesters before coming to a halt in front of them.

Some of the demonstrators appear to run up to the car to stop it when the driver suddenly accelerates into them.

Onlookers can be heard screaming as the driver speeds away. Local media report four people were run over by the car, with two of them now hospitalised in the Copiapo Hospital.

A protester told Chilean TV Channel ‘24 horas’: “He tried to pass twice, the first time he drove slowly and people stopped the car, then he revved and he ran several people over, he also hit me in my leg, there was a child inside the car.”

The General Attorney in the region Leonel Ibacahe Veliz confirmed on Twitter that the driver turned himself in a nearby police station half an hour after the incident and he was arrested. His name has not been disclosed and it is unclear if the driver was charged.

There are no updates on the condition of those hospitalised.
