An Argentine tourist has been fined for carrying too many people in his car – and dumping his poor mum-in-law in the boot with the beach gear.

Cops on the motorway SC-401 of the city of Florianopolis, in the southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina, stopped a Renault Duster after receiving reports from other motorists.

Once the vehicle was stopped, cops found the car was overloaded with people and a child was not correctly seated in a baby seat.

The mother in law of the driver was also found in the boot of the car, surrounded by beach items and she reportedly tried to hide with a blanket over her head upon seeing the cops.

Family members claimed that they wanted to save money and were all travelling in the same vehicle.

The driver was fined for an unspecified amount and half of the passengers in the vehicle were forced to take a taxi in order to comply with local laws.

The authorities warned that carrying passengers in the boot of a car is not only a traffic violation but also a risk for the person who is travelling there.

it is unclear how many members of the family were travelling in the car at the time of the incident.
