This is the moment a suspected drink-driver slams into a Volkswagen Golf on a motorway bridge sending it flying over the crash barrier and down a 50-foot drop.

The accident happened just after 11:00 pm local time on 31st May on Shanghai’s Middle Ring Road in East China.

Dashcam footage from a nearby vehicle shows the suspect’s black saloon attempting to merge into the motorway fast lane when its driver surnamed Wang, 56, suddenly swerves after appearing to spot the white VW Golf.

Wang’s saloon veers right and then left again, hitting the side of the Golf driven by a male motorist surnamed Liu, 35.

Liu’s hatchback is pushed into the concrete crash barriers and sparks fly as the vehicle ends up flying off the motorway entirely, with the car landing on the road below following a reported 10- to 15-metre (30- to 50-foot) drop.

Liu survived the accident after his Golf landed on its passenger side. Pictures show the the right side of the hatchback badly flattened and damaged.

Wang, meanwhile, allegedly fled the scene before Shanghai authorities arrested him at his home for drink-driving 50 minutes later.

Liu, who said he had been travelling at a steady pace of 80 kph (50 mph) at the time of the crash, is not in any life-threatening condition but continues to be treated at Shanghai’s 10th People’s Hospital.

Local authorities are still investigating the case.
