Volunteer firefighter Massimiliano Lucietti, 24, was found dead with a hunting shotgun wound to the head and his hunting pal Maurizio Gionta, 59, a former forest ranger, was then found dead nearby less than a day later after apparently leaving a note saying “don’t blame me”.

Police are investigating whether Massimiliano was killed by accident after he was apparently shot during a hunting excursion last week in a forest near the Italian city of Celledizzo in Trentino. The incident happened on Sunday, 30th October, according to local media reports.

Emergency services were called to the scene after the alarm was raised by Massimiliano’s hunting companion Maurizio Gionta, 59, who later reportedly took his own life by shooting himself in the head less than 24 hours later. The suspected suicide took place near the spot where Massimiliano’s lifeless body was discovered, according to reports.

A note that read “don’t blame me” was reportedly found in the former forest ranger’s car.

Investigations have ruled out the possibility that the 24-year-old shot himself after it was revealed that the bullet that killed him was fired by someone else’s hunting rifle and from a distance of at least half a metre.

Multiple theories are still being considered by authorities while they await the final results of Massimiliano’s autopsy, which was carried out on Wednesday, 2nd November.

This reportedly includes the possibility of a third person being involved in the volunteer firefighter’s untimely death.

Despite this, the initial findings of the authorities indicate that the death of the 24-year-old, who was described as a “gentle giant” by his friends, was most probably a tragic hunting accident.
