A 21-year-old Ukrainian student who had recently passed all her exams was strangled to death by a fellow Ukrainian, who then lied about finding her body when he went to visit her.

The victim, identified only as Ukrainian citizen Mariia, was found dead in a room at the Mlada Garda student dormitory in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, on Friday, 3rd June.

She was regarded as a top student, had recently passed all her exams, and had a bright future ahead of her after studying for a year at the Slovak University of Technology (STU), which owns the dormitory where she was allegedly killed.

Cops now say the male student who reported her death to the police, named only as Volodymyr, has been charged with her murder after allegedly admitting to killing her.

Volodymyr, 22, can be seen in police custody in this footage as he is led back to the dormitory to be quizzed about what happened. Local media reported that the victim’s fellow students and the staff at the dorm were in a state of shock.

STU spokesperson Juraj Rybansky said: “The case is being investigated by the police, who will provide additional information. STU deeply regrets the incident and expresses its sincere condolences to the bereaved.”

Slovakian Police for the Bratislava Region said in a statement: “Volodymyr, a citizen of Ukraine, faces up to 15 to 20 years in prison if he is found guilty in court.

“An investigator from the criminal police department of the Regional Directorate of the Police Force in Bratislava brought charges of a particularly serious murder crime in connection with the finding of the body of a 21-year-old woman, whose lifeless body was found on Friday (3rd June, 2022) in a dorm on Racianska Street.”

The police added: “According to the evidence secured so far, the accused man grabbed the young woman’s neck with both hands and started strangling her shortly after 12 noon on 2nd June, 2022. As a result, the woman suffered injuries that led to her death.

“For this reason, the investigation of the case was taken over by police officers of the Criminal Police Department of the Regional Directorate of the Police Force in Bratislava, who intensively continue the investigation and provide the necessary evidence in this regard.

“The case was registered immediately by the members of the District Directorate of the Police in Bratislava III on 3rd June, 2022, after the notification of the finding of the woman’s body, and at the same time criminal proceedings were initiated on the same day in the matter of the offence.
