The pretty 24-year-old feared blind when she splashed caustic soda onto her face when making home-made cosmetics has been told by doctors that she will see again.

Marta Bustos, who is Spanish, had moved to live in Seattle in the United States and stayed there “for love”.

She had been making soap and home-made cosmetics when the shocking accident happened, leaving both of her eyes horrifically burned by the caustic soda and she was taken to a local hospital, which then rushed her to the Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

She was left with horrific burns and in need of a cornea transplant.

Bustos’ mother Anna Gongora has now said: “Marta had a medical team who stabilised her eyes until Sunday. Now she has been assigned a team of two doctors who are more specialised in the matter.

“This team has assured her for the first time that she will recover her sight. We do not know what percentage she will gain but we know she will see again.

“This has been an injection of energy for Marta and for all of us who love her and wish her the best. When she was explaining it to us she was crying all the time.”

Gongora reportedly told local media that they will cancel a ‘GoFundMe’ campaign on 30th June with the help of a legal advisor who will help the family to make the process as transparent as possible.

The campaign has collected more than 246,000 EUR (222,814 GBP) for her treatment although the family were initially only asking for 75,000 EUR (67,879 GBP).

Gongora said: “We want to send a message to say thank you to all the people who have made an effort to help us in every possible way. We have realised that there are a lot of good people that without knowing Marta have got involved a lot.”

Some netizens asked the family why they kept the campaign active after collecting the money they requested.

Gongora said: “We do not have a budget for the whole process, we only know that Marta has been operated on four times and she has been in hospital for nine days.”

Local media report Bustos’ mother has not been able to travel to the United States because of the lockdown restrictions.

The family said on social media that they will give what is left of the donations after the cornea transplant to charity.
