This is the moment a stray dog waits patiently for a red light to change at a zebra crossing while humans carry on walking regardless before it makes its way to the other side after the light turns green.

The incident was caught on camera in the city of Balikesir, in north-western Turkey, and the footage was later widely shared on social media.

Animal lovers were amused by the sight of the dog waiting patiently for the lights to change while around a dozen pedestrians – as well as a motorcyclist – ignored the red light to cross the road anyway.

But the dog does not move from its position in the central reservation until the light turns green when it finally sets off to cross to the other side of the road.

Netizen ‘Turgut Delici’ commented: “Why can’t we be smart as dogs, this dog is definitely smarter than humans”, while ‘Aysegul Kuzu’ added: “Such a sweetie.”

And ‘Levent Gurcu’ noted: “Stray animals who live in cities learn the traffic rules. They don’t understand maybe but they see the cars stop on a red light and move on a green light. This is called evolution.”

Balikesir is the capital of the province of the same name which has clean beaches on both the Aegean and Marmara Seas making it increasingly popular with tourists.

Turkey is renowned for its stray dogs and cats which are well-loved by most residents who leave out food and bedding for them in the colder winter months.
