This poor dog is battling for its life after being shot in the head by armed robbers while trying to protect its elderly owners.

The incident took place in the city of La Plata in the eastern Argentine province of Buenos Aires when four armed robbers entered the property.

The poor pooch, 12-year-old Malevo, was adopted by Renato Santoni and his wife 10 years ago and was used as a guard dog at the property.

During the robbery, Malevo was shot in the head while its owners were forced to hand over their valuables at gunpoint, according to local media.

Reports said they stole 35,000 ARS (456 GBP), including the elderly man’s pension that he collected from the bank earlier that day, as well as a mobile phone, a TV and a firearm.

Santoni told local media that he “could not even look at Malevo” after his beloved dog had allegedly been shot by the thieves.

He added: “The robbers were also very fortunate as I had been to the bank earlier in the day to collect my pension.”

Police on the scene took the unconscious dog to the veterinary campus at the National University of La Plata for emergency treatment.

Reports said that the animal is currently fighting for its life on a breathing machine.

Police spokesman Juan Rodriguez confirmed on social media: “The dog is still alive, but it was shot in the face.”

The investigation is ongoing.
