A Mexican doctor has been arrested for the murder of his journalist girlfriend who was found with her throat cut after a strong argument.

The suspect, identified as Manuel Alejandro Sosa Benitez, 25, was arrested at a residence in the borough of Benito Juarez in the Mexican capital Mexico City and placed in preventative custody on 29th November.

Sosa Benitez is accused of killing his girlfriend Helida Yuritzbi Mendoza Rico, 23, on 17th October this year.

The victim was found dead on the floor with her throat cut in a property in the neighbourhood of Real Vallarta in the municipality of Zapopan in the Mexican state of Jalisco.

Local media said that neighbours called the police when they heard the couple shouting during a strong argument.

Officers then found Mendoza Rico’s lifeless body, but no traces of Sosa Benitez.

According to preliminary reports, the victim’s throat was slashed with a blade and her body had signs of other injuries, however it was not specified what they were.

Her family said the couple constantly argued, but there were no reports of any previous violent incidents.

Netizens have started an online campaign seeking justice for the young journalist and point to the 25-year-old doctor as the main suspect.

The investigation continues.
