Baffled doctors treating a man who turned up with intense abdominal pain discovered he had a huge gourd up his bottom.

The man had turned up to be treated at Xi’an Gaoxin Hospital in Xi’an, capital of Shaanxi Province in north-western China, telling medics that he was suffering from abdominal discomfort which had lasted around “six to seven hours”.

They said that the man was mumbling when they attempted to get the details of where exactly the discomfort was, but they noticed that he was clearly in pain as he could not even sit down without obviously being in agony.

The doctor said that they could find no obvious signs of swelling or inflammation when they probed his stomach area, so decided to send him for a scan instead.

The hospital’s Head of General Surgery, Zhou Liang, said it was then that they discovered the large gourd, which is a fleshy, typically large fruit with a hard skin, that was in his rectum.

Doctor Zhou, who spoke on local television and shared the scans, did not reveal whether the patient explained why he put the fruit up his backside (

Zhou said that he and his team worked for “six or seven hours” to remove the gourd from the man’s anus but they could not manage, so instead he had to operate on the man’s abdomen.

The medics then successfully removed the gourd, measuring around 20 centimetres by 10 centimetres (8 inches by 4 inches), after reaching it from the abdomen.

The patient is in a stable condition and expected to make a full recovery but it is unclear how long he will remain in hospital.
