This is the moment a disabled woman has to drag herself down the stairs of a metro station because the lift was not working properly.

The incident took place at La Cisterna station, in the city of Santiago in the Chilean capital.

A woman, apparently the subject’s mum, posted the video along with a comment lambasting local transport authorities for failing to act.

The unnamed woman posted: “This is how my daughter has to go down the stairs because all lifts are not working. We reported the case to the metro service, but nothing happened.”

She added: “My daughter got desperate and told me, mum, what are we going to do? how are we going to go down? people walked by but nobody helped us.”

The young woman, identified as Jessica, reportedly suffers from spina bifida, hydrocephalus and flaccid paralysis in 70 per cent of the body, so she needs a wheelchair.

Speaking to local media, she said: “I did not have any choice but to go down the steps as I had to take the metro to get to work. It is frustrating and humiliating too. It is not the first time, we always have to go through the same situation. Sometimes we want to go into the lift and people do not let us in.”

Netizens were outraged after the clip was shared online.

‘Papinodia1’ said: “Shame on the government who do not take care of disabled people”.

Following the outrage, the local metro operators said the maintenance of the station does not depend on them as the area is the responsibility of the Public Works department.

The department has said they are investigating.
