A Japanese netizen has set tongues wagging after posting photos of a table of untouched rice left by a group of carb-conscious sushi diners who simply ate the fish and left the rest.

In a country where children are taught that ‘every grain of rice has seven fortune gods’, leaving food in Japan can be considered disrespectful.

However, today’s diet-conscious diners have begun shunning carb-heavy contents as highlighted by netizen ‘6jsDrYcsuFZf7EB’ and a viral Twitter post of a table of plates of discarded rice.

The Twitter user accompanied the photos with the message: “Don’t eat sushi like this, you weirdo. If you don’t want to eat shari then buy sashimi at the supermarket!”

In Japan, sushi consists of a neta topping, usually raw fish or seafood, and shari, rice typically seasons with salt, sugar and vinegar.

The photos show the sari left on the plates which can anger many Japanese traditionalists as diners can order sashimi anytime which is raw fish without the rice.

Netizens had a lot to say about the topic, with the posts attracting comments such as “I work at a sushi restaurant and we see this all the time”, “Japan is crying at these images”, “the shari is also crying” and “I apologise to the country’s rice farmers who do their best to provide a good crop of rice”.
