A 19-year-old student has been arrested for killing his 17-year-old female flatmate and prosecutors claim he said the devil made him do it.

According to local media, the suspect, identified as Fabian Mauricio Campos, was a medical student at the University of Manizales in the central Colombian department of Caldas.

He lived in the same residence as the teenage victim, Juanita Correa Valencia.

At around 6.15am, other housemates heard screaming coming from the victim’s locked room and thought a robbery was taking place.

The housemates called the cops who arrived and broke down the locked bedroom door.

According to the lawyer of the victim’s family, David Becerra, the cops found the 17-year-old girl lying injured on the floor while the suspect was standing over her with a knife.

When a housemate asked Campos why he did it, the medical student reportedly said: “The Devil told me to kill her.”

One hour after being admitted to hospital, Correa Valencia died of her injuries, according to reports.

The family’s lawyer told reporters: “The young man said he killed the girl because he was hearing voices in his head and the Devil told him to do it. He said that he was able to rest after carrying out the act.”

Becerra also said that investigators found a letter in the suspect’s room that outlined a plan to kill Correa Valencia and then dispose of the body.

So far, it is believed that the teen, who belonged to a Pentecostal church, was attacked because the suspect did not like religious people as they consider themselves superior to others, according to local media.

Reports also said the suspect was a habitual drug user and his defence lawyer claimed that he is suffering from depression.

The authorities are waiting for the autopsy results before charging Campos with the crime, according to local media.

The investigation is ongoing.
