Detained Protester With Bone Cancer Denied Medical Care

A detained protester in Iran who has bone cancer has been denied medical care and will die soon if he is not treated.

Arash Sadeghi, 36, was arrested during a protest in Iran on 12th October, according to local media, and his dad Hossein told independent Iranian media: “If Arash is not treated for two months, he will not survive.”

The worried dad added: “After the start of nationwide protests in Iran, Arash would answer my calls, but later on in a short call he announced he was arrested and was in ward 209 of Evin Prison, which belongs to the Ministry of Intelligence.”

Arash Sadeghi is an activist and former political prisoner who was first arrested in 2009. In 2013, he was jailed for 19 years before being released in 2021. He was arrested again in October for participating in the Mahsa Amini protests.

Iranian forces have been cracking down on waves of civil disorder following the death of Mahsa Amini, 22, from Saqqez, Kurdistan Province, who was on a visit to Tehran when she was arrested by morality police, accused of violating hijab rules on 13th September.

She was allegedly beaten while in custody and spent the following days in a coma in the hospital before succumbing in the ICU on 16th September.

The clinic where she was treated said in a now-deleted social media post that she had been admitted brain-dead.

Alleged medical scans of her skull leaked by hackers showed that she had suffered bone fractures, haemorrhages, and brain oedema.

Independent Iranian media have claimed that Mahsa’s medical records showing her history of heart disease were faked by the Iranian government.

Numbers differ regarding how many people have been killed since the protests began.

The ongoing protests have so far claimed at least 384 lives, including 43 children, and injured at least 1,160, according to independent estimates.
