Barcelona forward Ousmane Dembele will reportedly miss the rest of the season as he is set to undergo surgery on a ripped hamstring tendon suffered in training.
French superstar Dembele, 22, suffered a rupture in his right hamstring during training on Monday which marks his fifth injury this season.
Barcelona made a statement following the news saying: “Dembele will undergo surgery on Tuesday, 11 February in Turku, Finland, to treat a rupture to the proximal tendon of his right hamstring.
“Once the operation has been concluded, further information will be given regarding his approximate recovery time.”
However, local media report the French forward will remain off the pitch for the remainder of the season as his expected recovery time after the surgery will be several months.
Dembele will be operated on by Finnish sports doctor Sakari Orava, 74, the doctor who performed the same surgery successfully on Dembele in 2017 but on his left leg.
The current World Cup champion suffered his last injury on 27th November in Barcelona’s 3-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund in a Champions League group stage match.
Local media report Dembele was recovering from the injury and was expected to return to the squad for the Champions League Round of 16 match against Napoli set for 25th February.
Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez, 33, is also injured as he is recovering from a right meniscus injury which could reportedly keep him off the pitch for most of the remainder of the season.
It is unclear if Barcelona plan to find a replacement for the winger after their failed attempt in the January transfer window to find one for Suarez.
Barcelona are second in La Liga with 43 points and are set to play Athletic Bilbao today (Thursday) for the Copa del Rey.
