The delivery man who was filmed repeatedly spitting on a lift’s button panel in a viral video now seen over 15 million times has been arrested and could face jail.

The staff member wearing the blue uniform of Fengniao Delivery – a logistical sub-service of Alibaba-owned delivery giant ELEME – is being held on public order charges.

Viral security footage taken inside a residential building’s lift in Beijing’s Fengtai District in the Chinese capital shows the delivery man, surnamed Kan, entering the lift on the afternoon of 22nd September.

He selects the floors he wants to go to but then begins spitting at the lift button panel, leaving phlegm sliding down the side of the lift car.

He repeats the action four times on camera, the video shows.

Kan, 30, was arrested after building management handed the footage over to Fengtai police, who detained him for the public order offence.

The delivery man told police his actions were an angry response to security guards who barred him from driving his electric bike into the gated community – meaning he had to walk.

He remains in custody as investigations continue.

Previously in China, minor public order offences have been punished by up to 15 days in jail.

His employer ELEME had said it was conducting an internal investigation into the matter, but the company had given no further comment at the time of writing.
