This is the moment a young food delivery driver is crushed and killed by a falling pillar after an out-of-control woman driver crashes into a wall.

The incident happened as the unnamed female motorist’s SUV was hit by a lorry as she turned through a junction on Lianhang Road in Shanghai’s Minhang District in East China.

CCTV footage of the incident on 3rd December shows the black SUV careering out of control and slamming into the wall at the entrance of a local software development firm.

The concrete and red brick pillar collapses and falls onto the delivery man just as he rides past on his scooter.

The man named only as Mr Xing, 22, worked for Chinese food delivery giant Meituan, and was reportedly fatally struck by the pillar despite having been wearing a motorcycle helmet.

The authorities said they had detained the woman as part of ongoing investigations into the tragedy.

Like many major economies, China is wrestling with the moral question of whether to regulate low-cost zero-hours jobs in sectors such as food delivery and ride hailing.

The country’s booming gig economy food delivery market is estimated to be worth over 27 billion GBP.

But the consequences, according to Shanghai police, include statistics such as one delivery man or boy being seriously injured or killed in a traffic collision every 60 hours.
