This is the moment a deer is rescued from a water pipe on the side of a motorway after becoming trapped there when it munched on berries and became “drunk”.

The rescue, carried out by the SDIS60 (Departmental Fire and Rescue Service), was filmed in Therdonne in the northern French department of Oise.

According to local media, the SDIS60 used divers and dog teams during the rescue. Specialists had to go into the water to rescue the animal with the help of nets.

The rescue was supervised by Dr Nicolas Dirn, a veterinarian with the Oise fire and rescue service.

He told local media: “At this time of the year, deer are fond of buds and berries, especially burdock, which contain large quantities of alkaloids.

“Absorbed by the deer, these substances have a psychotropic effect that makes them behave strangely.

“They become brasher, stagger awkwardly, and sometimes even stumble into the thickets. That is why we call it deer drunkenness!”

According to local media, once released and checked, the deer was taken away from the motorway area and returned to its natural habitat.

One netizen commented: “It does not matter whether they are human or animal, these guys don’t differentiate. Respect to these firefighters!”
