A young influencer found lifeless on her bed with a gunshot wound to the head was abused for years by her ex-stepfather, who allegedly stalked her shortly before she was found dead, police say.
Beautiful Anna Carolina Tadeu Pascuin Nicoletti, 24, was found dead in her apartment in the city of Sorocaba in the south-eastern Brazilian state of Sao Paulo on 13th November.
The police have named the prime suspect for her death as her former stepfather, Eduardo de Freitas. He was arrested and taken into custody for 60 days before being released with conditions. He is accused of aggravated murder.
Carol, as the victim was known to her friends and family, was living in the nearby municipality of Pilar do Sul when the stalking began, according to the Civil Police (Brazil’s investigative police force).
According to the police force, the suspect, believing the young woman was with someone else at the time, once broke into her residence and sent her photos of her rooms.
She moved to nearby Sorocaba, to escape the stalking, according to her relatives. However, the suspect is believed to have created a fake profile and pretended to be a customer so he could visit her at the store where she worked as a sales assistant.
The victim’s mother reportedly told the police she had once found a photo of the suspect naked that would have been taken when he was alone with the victim.
She quizzed her daughter, then aged 18, and the teen allegedly replied that her stepfather had been abusing her since she was 14. They did not report the alleged abuse to the police at the time.
The mother separated from the stepfather, but the man did not leave his former stepdaughter alone, even enrolling in the same veterinary medicine course as the young woman, prompting her and her mum to take out a restraining order on him.
CCTV footage also caught the suspect visiting his former stepdaughter at her workplace, prompting her to run away and hide. It was on this day that he is believed to have killed her.
He told the police that after driving to her workplace, he went straight to his mum’s house and only left the next morning for work. However, his mother denied this to the police.
Screenshots of the suspect’s and victim’s chat history on a messaging app shows how he hounded her, sending her endless messages. However, his legal team has claimed he sent messages out of “parental concerns”.
The post-mortem gave the young woman’s cause of death as the gunshot to her forehead. The murder weapon, which the victim’s acquaintances and relatives allege was kept by the suspect in his house, has not been found to this day.
Investigations are ongoing, and the suspect has been ordered not to come within 100 metres of the victim’s family.
