Police in Brazil have arrested a Death Wish-style vigilante who killed and burned two men in revenge for the gang rape and murder of his wife, who was then set on fire to hide the evidence.
Police in Ceilandia, Federal District, arrested Fabio Eduardo Pereira Melo on 4th November on suspicion of carrying out the brutal executions, which included also burning their bodies just like his wife was burned.
The case dates back to March last year, when Pereira Melo’s wife, Manuela Martins Pires, went out for a drink with four men in Ceilandia.
According to the investigation, the men took advantage of her drunken state and gang-raped the 26-year-old in an area of woodland.
They were named by police as Ildebrando Vieira Feitosa, Wagner Pereira de Araujo, Wanderson Farlei Ferreira Reis, and Divino Gouveia da Silva.
Following her rape, they murdered her and burned her body to try to remove any traces of their DNA, the investigation found.
The following month, Manuela’s widower began to hunt down the individuals. He managed to track down Ildebrando Vieira Feitosa’s brother, Francisco Mardonio Vieira Feitosa, whose charred body was later found near a waste plant.
In August, he managed to catch up with Pereira de Araujo. He allegedly stabbed him to death and also set fire to his corpse.
Another of the attackers, Ildebrando Vieira Feitosa, who is is believed to be the main suspect behind Manuela’s murder, was arrested on 3rd November.
In the same operation – dubbed Operation Revenge – cops found and arrested the suspected vigilante hubby.
Police chief Luiz Gustavo Ferreira reported that Pereira Melo is currently maintaining his innocence.
He told local media: “He was very shaken and cried a lot, but he does not admit to being the one who killed them.
“But this is not going to hold up, as there is a lot of evidence about the incident.”
Of the other two men linked to the woman’s death, Gouveia da Silva is reported to be on the run, and Ferreira Reis’ whereabouts is unclear.
