Days After Marrying Love Of His Life Newlywed Man Dies In Hit And Run Crash On His Way To Honeymoon

A newlywed man has been killed in a hit-and-run crash whilst he and his wife were driving to their dream honeymoon.

The newlywed man’s wife was also badly injured in the accident and due to a neck injury, she spent what should have been her honeymoon recovering hospital and coming to terms with the death of her husband.

Christopher Coffey was in the car with his new wife Mary Moore Coffey on their way to their honeymoon in Florida when a white Dode Charger smashed into the back of them leaving Christopher in critical condition last Friday, (17th September).

Christopher was transferred to a local hospital from the site of the accident on the I-95 in Volusia County where he died on the following day (18th September).

The newlywed’s family said in a statement: “He passed peacefully surrounded by his family at 9:45 a.m. Christopher’s final wishes were to donate his organs and the family had a transplant team waiting.”

They added: “The Coffey family extends appreciation and gratitude to so many people who helped Christopher on this journey – the police, fire and rescue, and medical response teams provided tremendous support and compassion. “

The statement concluded: “Please continue to keep his family and friends in your prayers.”

According to the family, the couple had been together for a decade and had spent years planning their dream honeymoon.

Chesney Rutherford, Christopher’s cousin, told the local news site Wbir: “We were very, very close growing up. We spend a lot of time together. He’s just an awesome person, he would give you the shirt off his back.”

Chesney added: “We all realize that finding that driver is not going to fix this family, it’s not going to heal Christopher, I can’t imagine anybody going through this and I would hate for that to happen to somebody else because we couldn’t find the person.”

She went on: “This is not how it was supposed to go. And it’s hard to understand. And we’re just all trying to cope, the best we can.”

Florida Highway Patrol investigators found that a white Dodge Charger was merging onto the highway when it smashed into the newlywed couple’s car from behind at high speed.

The driver of the Dodge then drove off leaving Christopher fighting for his life and Mary severely injured.

The Florida state troopers are now focusing thier investigation on locating the driver of the Dodge Charger.
