A woman who posted an emotional tribute to her wealthy farmer dad on social media has been arrested after cops claimed the cash-strapped woman had hired hitmen to shoot him dead so she could pay off her debts with an inheritance.
Dayane Claudino Miranda Marcos and her husband Tiago da Rosa Marcos allegedly hired hitmen to kill Paulo Sergio de Freitas Miranda, a 57-year-old farm operator, in the municipality of Navirai in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul on 23rd September.
Dayane also posted several pictures of her dad on social media following the killing with the caption “May God give you eternal rest” just days before she was arrested.
Dayane was arrested this month by which point her social media post had accumulated over 400 comments from friends and family expressing their condolences for her loss.
However, after her arrest, netizens commented on the post expressing their fury and disappointment in Dayane and her husband.
One netizen wrote:” Smart, beautiful… and now an accomplice to a murder.”
Several other comments were left expressing anger towards Dayane for allegedly deceiving her friends and family.
Dayane and her husband are believed to be heavily in debt and, by killing her dad, she had hoped to get enough inheritance money to cover the repayments.
Tiago’s cousin, who was not named, allegedly contacted two gunmen on behalf of the couple and brought them to Navirai.
They then hired a getaway driver for BRL 5,000 (GBP 669), who took the gunmen to the victim’s address.
The hitmen turned up at the victim’s home and fired several shots at both him and his wife on 23rd September, according to Campo Grande News.
Paulo died four days after the attack, during which he was shot in the face, arms, abdomen and hands.
His wife survived the attack unharmed, but police believe that she was also on the armed group’s hit list.
The police caught up with the armed group and, during a shoot-out, one of the suspects was killed.
Nathalie Claudino Miranda, Marco’s sister, said that the family suspected Tiago may have orchestrated the killing, but they did not suspect Dayane until they saw her at the hospital.
Nathalie said that her sister was acting very strangely at the hospital, and even though her husband had been arrested on 20th October, she had continued to support him, which only made her appear more complicit in the crime.
Nathalie added: “It was a shock because he is a father, he is her father and my father, and he was always a wonderful guy, he always tried to give the best for us. She didn’t see it, didn’t appreciate it.”
Local laws prohibit her from getting an inheritance if found guilty of the crime.
According to local media, six suspects have been indicted, including the married couple, and the investigation is ongoing.
It is believed the cousin is one of them, but this is not confirmed.
