A father has reportedly shot his spouse dead before turning the gun on himself in front of their four-year-old son.

The shocking incident took place in the town of Aznalcollar in the province of Seville in the Spanish autonomous community of Andalusia in the south of the country.

Reports state that the husband Eugenio Luque, 51, allegedly shot his wife Maria del Mar Castro, 43, in the head with a pellet gun in the family home this Wednesday at midnight before committing suicide by shooting himself in the head.

Neighbours reportedly called the police after they heard the couple’s four-year-old son, who had witnessed the incident, crying.

Reports said that the police found the dead body of the woman with a phone in her hands and an initial investigation revealed that she had called her eldest daughter, who is 20 years old, to ask her to come home as her father had become violent during a heated argument.

According to the Mayor of Aznalcollar Juan Jose Fernandez the couple’s three children, who are 20, 15, and four years old, are receiving counselling from psychologists. None of the children have been named in reports.

Mayor Fernandez said that the husband had a licence to use guns as he was a hunter and there were no previous reports of violence in the family, local media reported.

The bodies of the dead couple were transferred to the Forensic Medicine Institute where they undergo an autopsy. No results have yet been reported.

Local media report the victim is the third woman murdered in Andalusia this year in a case of domestic violence and the 12th in Spain.
