Local media report the police in the passing patrol car opened fire on the armed thugs after the criminals fired the first shots and one of the gang, named in reports as 16-year-old Eddie Michel, dropped to the ground after being hit.

His accomplices managed to escape on the motorbike but police officers had to protect the injured youth from being beaten by the customers of the restaurant whose belongings he had just robbed.

A video shows the police officers standing over the injured youth as the victims of the robbery try to attack him.

The police called an ambulance but the youngster died before it arrived and a moving video shows his father kneeling by his body, holding the dead youngster as he sobs, saying “my son, my son!”

A clip taken at the youngster’s wake shows other youths, who have not been identified in reports, firing an automatic weapon into the sky as music plays.

It is unclear if the police who shot the youngster are being investigated and the other two youths who robbed the restaurant have not been arrested.
