A young cyclist has died after falling off his bike and being run over by a bus near the end of a city race.

Donaldo Ramirez, 26, died near the finish line of a cycling race in the municipality of La Libertad near the El Salvadorian capital San Salvador.

The race started at Cangrejera Beach and finished in Malecon Puerto de la Libertad.

The cyclist reportedly hit a pothole 500 metres (1,640 feet) from the finish line and fell off his bike.

Local media said the driver of a 192 bus failed to notice the man on the ground and accidentally ran over him, causing his death.

Red Cross paramedics rushed to help the cyclist, but he quickly died at the scene and his body was removed in front of stunned spectators and other contestants.

The local authorities are reportedly investigating why the cycle race took place on the bus route that day.

The bus driver, who has not been arrested, remained at the scene as the police started their investigation. He also underwent alcohol and drugs tests and was not found to be under the influence of either.

The investigation is ongoing.
