This is the cute puppy that sprang out of a suitcase used by an animal trafficker hoping to smuggle it into Germany from a Hungarian puppy farm to sell.

The animal smuggler was driving in the direction of Freilassing, a town of about 16,000 inhabitants in the south-eastern corner of Bavaria in Germany, where he planned to sell the dog.

However, he was stopped by the police on the A8 motorway in the area of Walserberg near the German border with Austria.

The police were surprised to find a scared Pomeranian puppy locked in a suitcase without any air gaps. The little puppy was only eight weeks old and originated from Hungary, police believe probably from a puppy farm.

After the driver was caught, the small Pomeranian was immediately taken to an animal shelter.

Ilona Wojahn, president of the Bavarian Animal Protection Association, said: “I don’t want to imagine what the little guy in the suitcase must have endured for hours in the dark and without air, being scared to death. I am glad that he is now safe and well looked after in the animal shelter.”

According to Wojahn, the demand for puppies is currently surging and prices for popular breeds such as Pomeranians can reach up to several thousand euros.

She suggested that joint action against the illegal puppy trade should take place throughout Europe to close the breeding factories, which are solely profit-oriented and the welfare of the animals is never taken into consideration.
