This is the moment an adorable baby seal on a block of ice without its mother is rescued and wrapped in a towel.

The incident occurred in the western Russian city of Sestroretsk in the Kurortny District of federal city of Saint Petersburg after passersby spotted the baby seal by itself in the waters of the Gulf of Finland.

The worried onlookers then called the local animal rescue service and in the video one of the rescuers can be seen cautiously stepping onto the ice to reach the seal, the exact species of which has not been reported.

He then lifts the animal into his arms before walking back onto land with the fury pup wrapped in a towel.

Local media report the seal had been spotted on two separate pieces of ice and the animal was taken to a veterinary surgeon.

There are no updates on the animal’s condition and local social group ‘Rescuing Seal’ shared the images with a message asking residents to be attentive as many seals are expected to give birth in this period.

They asked for residents to look out for baby seals which had been left alone and to then alert the rescuers.

Netizen ‘Olga Ivanushkina’ said: “Cool! Thank you very much for saving these animals and waiting for news on other saved lives.”

Other netizens reportedly created groups to work together to patrol the shore and look out for seals in danger.
