CUT AND RUN: Man Back With Family 25 Years After Fleeing Circumcision

This is the touching moment a mother is reunited with her son 25 years after he fled as a 13-year-old because he feared he was about to be circumcised.

The man – not named in local media – returned to Klaten on the Indonesian island of Java for the heartwarming reunion.

Social workers who supervised the meeting say the man – now 38 – had been living in another town on the island all the time.

Video footage of the reunion on 25th January begins with the astonished mother being revived by friends after she apparently fainted in shock.

Then her sheepish looking son emerges from the middle of a group of people and his mum rushes towards him.

She can be seen patting and hugging him before the video footage runs out.

Joko Prayitno, an officer with the Klaten subdistrict Social Welfare Coordination Team, said: “Through assessments and checking with the family, the person in question had left when he was in 1st grade.

“It is said that it was because of the fear of circumcision.”

He said that the man’s family had been looking for him for more than 20 years.

In Muslim communities in Indonesia, there is a general consensus that young boys must be circumcised to be able to enter a mosque.
