This footage shows a motorbike courier’s incredible escape after a lorry veered onto the pavement and narrowly avoided crushing him against a gate.
The near miss took place on Manoel Moreira Lima Street in Maracanau in north-eastern Brazil yesterday morning (Monday, 23rd May).
CCTV footage of the crash shows the man standing on the pavement with a crash helmet over his arm talking into his mobile phone.
Suddenly, a passing lorry’s load gets snagged on an overhanging tree and the heavy vehicle veers to the right and mounts the pavement.
The man is hit by the lorry and slammed into a gate but, astonishingly, the truck comes to a halt just a few inches from his chest.
He appears startled but can be seen running away apparently uninjured.
The two men in the lorry cabin were able to get out of the vehicle on their own and were unscathed.
The local road authorities later said the lorry was carrying material collected from companies to be recycled and it hit the tree after dodging a passing car.
They said the man on the pavement was a motorcycle courier and he was taken to hospital and treated for minor injuries.
They confirmed that the men in the lorry were uninjured, but they said the lorry’s documents had expired and the vehicle was not fully roadworthy.
They gave the owners a deadline to carry out the necessary repairs. If these are not made within the timeframe, the vehicle will be withdrawn from the road.
