This is the moment police officers gun down a 550lb bull in cold blood after the brave animal escaped slaughter and sprinted for freedom onto a motorway.

Footage from the Lichuan-Wanzhou Expressway over the county-level city of Lichuan in Central China’s Hubei Province shows the enraged animal charging at a toll roll employee during 5-kilometre (3-mile) rampage.

CCTV images dated 15th November shows the bull standing on the motorway, forcing motorists to circle around the large animal as it drives to charge at the cars.

According to local police, the 250-kilogramme (550 lb) bull escaped its owner Mr Hu’s home at around 6am local time as the beef vendor and a friend were attempting to slaughter it and take its meat to a market for sale.

The angry bull made its way up a slip road and found its way to Lichuan East Toll Station, where it later gained access to the motorway.

Policeman Xu Xiaojun said: “When we arrived many cars were already trying to avoid the bull.

“They were swerving around it, but the bull would run towards the vehicles to attack them.

“It was a very dangerous situation and posed a big threat to public safety.

“After speaking to the bull’s owner, we decided to have the relevant department put the animal down.”

Traffic camera footage shows an officer armed with a rifle firing a shot at the bull, causing it to collapse momentarily.

A second shot is fired shortly after, killing the bull.

The animal was later returned to Mr Hu, but it is unclear whether the beef vendor will be punished for the disruption caused.
