These images show the packed carriages in public trains in the Spanish capital on the first day of focused confinement after growing cases of COVID-19.

The pictures were taken in the Madrid Metro located in the Spanish capital city of Madrid yesterday (Monday).

They show crowds of people with face masks crammed inside carriages as some are seen holding onto pole grips standing inches next to other commuters.

Platforms are also filled with locals waiting for their train as waiting times of up to 15 minutes are seen on the notices above them.

The delays angered several citizens as the day marked the first after a focused confinement was instated in 37 areas in the city affecting thousands that was implemented yesterday (Monday).

People living in the confined neighbourhoods will be allowed to leave, but, only for work, health, or administrative-related reasons and will require a physical document to justify it.

However, despite the tough measures instated to fight the spread of COVID-19, citizens were angered to find themselves packed inside carriages making it impossible to follow safety protocol on their way to work or school.

Several netizens took pictures of the full trains and voiced their frustration as some directly place the responsibility on the Community of Madrid President Isabel Diaz Ayuso with ‘marcampos1971’ saying: “Don’t worry Ayuso, you have it all under control.”

‘_maaandy1297’ wrote: “What the h*ll are they doing with us Usera confined if in the Metro we are packed like sardines” apparently referring to the Usera neighbourhood which has been one of the confined areas.

‘Srtabarbara’ commented: “Really? Unbelievable. Madrid Community, why do you confine us if this happens after.”

The major delays were caused by a problem in the electric wiring in the Alcala de Henares station which caused problems when trains wanted to go through some of the busiest stations in the city.

There have been no further reports on the incident.
