This is the moment a bungling driver writes off his Volkswagen SUV after trying to overtake a lorry and clipping it sending him smashing into another HGV.

The dramatic crash which fortunately caused no fatal injuries happened at 9am on 30th November as the owner of the VW Tiguan, surnamed Zhang, was crossing the Hangzhou Bay Bridge in East China’s Zhejiang Province.

Dashcam video from a lorry shows Zhang’s Volkswagen speeding past on the left side in a bid to cut in front of the driver’s cabin before the lane closes.

But Zhang attempts the merging manoeuvre too late and is forced to move back into the inside lane too soon by traffic cones set up due to ongoing road works. He clips a lorry and is knocked into a neighbouring lane where he collides with a transporter, and overturns.

Zhang and his wife were able to climb out the wreckage, with neither of them suffering any serious injuries.

His VW, however, is expected to be scrapped.

Authorities say Zhang will be found fully liable for the accident and he has been fined hi 200 RMB – 23 GBP – for dangerous driving.

Zhang told police he expected the lorry driver to let him pass.
